Case Study: Last Resort Cabin

Q&A from the owner of Last RESORT Cabin

Q: Brian, tell me about the beginnings of the Last Resort Cabin. I understand the land was purchased in 2007 and the building finished in 2008. What did you initially want your cabin and property to have before the groundbreaking?

We wanted a house that could accommodate two families with lots of kids for weekends and holidays.  We also wanted to have it laid out in a manner that could allow for some privacy and separation if we had a big crowd.

Q: What services did Steve Otto Construction provide in the building of the property?

Steve and his team really did all of the work from properly “sighting” the house to clearing the trees, pouring the foundation, and ultimately making good alterations along the way the house unfolded.    All components from interior and exterior were directed by Steve and he also assisted with how we addressed the waterfront from stairs and tiering of the land to ensure a stable sight.   He also supervised the building and installation of a very strong dock system.

Q: Steve Otto Construction sourced, hand-built, and finished almost every aspect of the property. What detail(s) are you most fond of?

I am most fond of the “great room” as the combination of a massive fireplace, detailed cedar posts and railings along with amazing beams and details in the kitchen give it a wow factor.

Q: Was there a particular challenge and solution that stands out?

When we completed the great room and it was so large, we needed to add “decorative/non-weight supporting” beams to bring the room into scale and make it more appealing, that feature and the custom cedar railings are the big “solutions” that made a difference.

Q: The Kitchen, bathrooms feature craftsman carpentry and furniture. Can you describe the end result?

These areas have proven to be lasting in quality while maintaining and visual appeal.  Steve and the team built custom cabinets and used wood for all elements of the bathrooms and kitchen with the exception of tile and appliances.  The bathrooms look as good as they did when they were built and the quality and style have proven to be the biggest reason.

Q: What was a favorite place to spend time on the property?

I love the back porch, we have a fireplace and view of the river that is just great! Really like the cedar decking that makes the floors warm and more comfortable year-round!

Q: A dock was built so you and your family could enjoy the water and area. Did the work outside the cabin meet your expectations?

The boat dock and systems connecting are particularly excellent. IF you review other docks on the river, very few have the incredible metal works and bridges to withstand the wear and tear of the river and also provide a great place for spending time on the river.  I also appreciate the work Steve did to site a very nice driveway and garage that really worked with the topography and made it all seem to fit in just right.

Q: Would you recommend Steve Otto Construction to others?

I feel Steve is a very “talented” builder and preoccupied with high quality design and materials.  I would recommend Steve Otto if you are interested detailed, high quality custom construction that is built to last.
